Projection Mapping of the Seasonal Light Experience at Frederik Meijer Gardens Amphitheater

We were tasked by Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park to project light onto a canvas, the amphitheater stage and create an immersive experience. Below is a behind the scenes video allowing you an inside look at the creative process behind projection mapping animation and the custom music that was written. It showcases the hard work and dedication that goes into creating a unique and captivating experience. Learn more about the technology and techniques used to create these amazing visuals and gain a better understanding of the creative process and the artistry behind this amazing project that was a year in the making.

Projection Mapping
Behind The Scenes

Objective

This amazing project started with a very high-level creative brief provided by Frederik Meijer Gardens & Sculpture Park. They tasked us with one goal: project light onto a canvas, the amphitheater stage – and “image map” that light onto the different pieces of architecture.
This animated light would be paired with an original music score and laser lights to create an immersive experience as part of the University of Michigan Health-West Christmas & Holiday Traditions.
The subtle storyline was to start with a seed and grow into a tree that rest of sequence stems from Conflict, Transformation, Resolution, Communicated nonliterally, abstractly through music, shape, color, form, movement. We would work with Live Space who was responsible for measuring and projecting the light to take advantage of the architectural lines of the amphitheater stage.

This project was something special – a chance to do something remarkable they may not happen again. We had to seize the moment!

What is Projection Mapping?

Projection Mapping is the art of using projectors to map and direct light onto a surface, turning 3D planes or objects onto a canvas. We then use animation and innovative coding to present highly engaging, captivating, and mesmeric content; a digital-virtual swapping of all the surfaces we’ve mapped.

The Whole Nine Yards

One of the most important steps before designing the visual landscape for projection mapping is measuring. Especially if the planes are non-traditional. An image surface that includes numerous planes, curves, or other geometric forms most likely will need innovative geometry alteration.

The amphitheater mapping was defined by the facades of the pillars and ceiling. In the video, we documented the measuring process along with testing the dimensions at the amphitheater a few months later.

From Holiday Magic to Bold Brand Moves

Meijer Gardens had a clear vision for their concept and goals, aiming to create an immersive holiday experience. For those exploring projection mapping, the approach might differ—perhaps sparking excitement around a new product or brand, or using dynamic visuals to highlight the significance of a major event in a way that resonates with the audience.
Projection mapping can also serve to make a bold statement or enhance an atmosphere. Whether it’s delivering captivating visuals that elevate the environment or creating experiences that complement the setting without overpowering it, the possibilities are vast.
